The Healthy Kitchen: 35 Best Foods to Stock in Your Fridge and Pantry

Today was my grocery shopping day and in addition to our normal staples, I tried to incorporate some additional items so the kids can still enjoy their snacks without a lot of the normal sugary choices. I found myself buying string cheese, peanut butter, pretzel sticks, cheese cubes, whole wheat tortillas, crackers, yogurt, oatmeal, 100 calorie bags of microwavable popcorn, unsweetned applesauce, apple & eve juice(no sugar added), frozen strawberries. If I do give them regular juice like OJ or apple juice I dilute with water.

I normally pack my little man's lunch and although he prefers to take PB&J every day, I try to switch it up a bit by using whole wheat bread, tortillas or even waffles. In the past week, I received some really great ideas on snacks from my readers so I tried to incorporate a lot of those suggestions on my grocery list. The kids love yogurt and I never thought about adding frozen fruit for a smoothie. I know they are now fans of apple slices with peanut butter. The one thing I like about using tortillas for sandwiches is I can hide lettuce and tomato and my little man is none the wiser. He enjoys the sandwich so much and totally forgets about eating vegetables. I am committed to providing the best possible menu in spite of their picky eating habits.

In terms of the other snacks, I put those in an undisclosed location to control their desire to snack around the clock. I feel good about taking on this challenge and know the kids will definitely benefit in the long run.

I read great food items to have on hand in the fridge, pantry and freezer. You may find this helpful as well.

The Princess and the Frog Movie Premiere

Since my little man was off from school I decided to take both kids to see the movie before the weekend rush. We surprised my little diva at school with her new tiara and the fact we were going to see the movie this evening. Thanks to my little man for being such a good sport! He told me to hide him going into the theatre because it was a princess movie. I tried to find my little diva some goodies before we picked her up from school. The animation was exceptional, the music was definitely on point and plenty of comedic moments throughout the movie. Princess Tiana is absolutely beautiful!
The kids appeared to enjoy the movie and my little diva did very well with sitting for over an hour. I am anxious to discuss the movie with other moms to get your thoughts. My lips are sealed on the movie, so hurry and see it this weekend.
The movie was obviously a hit it debuted at $25million this weekend!

Potty Training Days

Initially I was under the impression that girls potty train easier than boys. Now I have to change this thought after having the experience with a boy and now my little diva. It is my conclusion that each child is different regardless of gender and it is a matter of the individual child's growth and development. I did vow to encourage rather than push my little diva into meeting some sort of potty training schedule. Since she is a huge fan of Dora the Explorer I bought her the toilet seat cover and Dora stickers. She does have a traditional potty but she feels more like a big girl when she uses "mommy's potty". I must admit potty training takes a lot of patience which I am short on at time. Is that believable as a mom-LOL!

On Monday night my little diva asked to wear her Dora panties on Tuesday. While I was getting all of her clothes together for school on Tuesday morning, she went into her dresser drawer and pulled out her Dora panties. Then she had to announce to everyone in the house what she was wearing. I thought, wow she is serious! Before getting fully dressed, I made sure she used the potty and then asked before we left the house. I was so proud when we got in the car and arrived at school with dry clothes. In my mind I was thinking this is working like a charm. We arrived at school about 9:00 and I checked back 2 hours later and there was an accident. Ok, we can expect those along the way and I will attribute it to her having a great time on the playground and not enough time to enter the building and reach the bathroom. After getting her clothes changed and a new pair of undies put on she had a steller dry afternoon. We even ran an errand after pick up and she was dry when we arrived home. Yipee I thought. This was a great "DRY" run however we used her Easy Ups for bedtime.

Today, was another day with our Dora undies. It will be interesting to see how her day went.

Museums & Cultural Attractions

At the African American Museum in Philadelphia kids will especially like seeing how the stars of the Negro Baseball League compared with those in the "white" majors. An important history lesson for both young and old is the Supreme Court’s Brown versus the Board of Education ruling, a decision aimed at ending segregation in public schools. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of this historic ruling, the museum is hosting Brown V. Board of Education: 50 Years of Integration, 1954-2004, an exhibit that looks at early civil rights efforts in Philadelphia and beyond. Through December 30, 2004. 701 Arch Street, (215) 574-0380, http://www.aampmuseum.org/

A tasty experience for the whole family is Chocolate: The Exhibition, on display at The Academy of Natural Sciences from June 12, 2004 through September 6, 2004. The African American Museum in Philadelphia presents a new exhibition "Audacious Freedom: African Americans in Philadelphia 1776 – 1876", premieres on June 19, 2009. Here is a snippet of the press release:

"Audacious Freedom gives us the opportunity to celebrate the richness of the culture and experiences of people of African descent", explained AAMP’s President and CEO Romona Riscoe Benson. "Philadelphia was an economically strong, socially dynamic and culturally cosmopolitan environment during this period. People of color played a vital role as entrepreneurs, craftsmen and advocates for social justice. Telling their story is a critically important part of the Museum’s mission and responsibility to this community and to the overall fabric of the role of African Americans in American history. "
